American Idol Tale of the Tape

Here's my "American Idol" tale of the tape.

Contestant David Archuletta David Cook Syesha Mercado
Age 17 25 21
Strength Squeaky Clean Can actually sing and play guitar. She's a beauty, her name has the word "Yes" in the middle.
Weakness Forgets the words to songs, tendency to pick the sappiest song possible. Huge forehead That stupid baby voice
Best Song "Imagine" "Hello" "Yesterday"
Worst Song Everything else "Little Sparrow" "Saving All My Love For You"
Sob Story Throat problem when he was younger where he thought he might not be able to speak. Stepbrother has brain cancer. Father had drug problems.
Crazy Paula Comment I wanted to squish you...and dangle you from my rear view mirror. Left me with a big appetite. You're smart because you picked a song that not many people know.
Taller Than Ryan Seacrest No Yes Yes
Embarrassing Video Package Stalking the first-season American Idol contestants when he was 9. Admitting he loves crossword puzzles. Revealing her talent of doing a baby voice.
Chance of Winning Front runner, but could be hurt by being "teacher's (judges') pet." Good, if viewers still feel guilty over Chris Daughtry coming in fourth. Remote, unless one of the two Davids flubs, and she has an amazing performance.

Fox29 Catches Cops

Fox29's chopper, Sky Fox caught a controversial confrontation between Philadelphia police officers and suspects.

Fox is calling this exclusive video.  I wonder if it has to share it with NBC10.

Last week the stations began sharing resources including their helicopters.

UPDATE - We have learned that the arrangement between Fox29 and NBC10 involves sharing video on generic stories such as press conferences or events that both would be at anyway.  In a case such as this story, it does not come under the sharing arrangement.

Big Ron Update

According to WOGL 98.1-FM spokesperson Cynthia Webster, 200 people attended and over four-thousand watched the webcast of Friday's funeral for "Big" Ron O'Brien, who died of pneumonia last week at the age of 56.

Angela Mason and Cadillac Jack will man the 3 - 7 p.m. shift until a permanent replacement is found. Webster said the station will conduct a nationwide talent search.

6ABC's Keith Russell Discusses Marvin Harrison Case

According to profootballtalk.com, 6ABC sportscaster Keith Russell shared news about the Marvin Harrison story, not on Channel 6, but on an AM radio station in Florida.

Russell spoke about the story on the Jason Jackson show on Miami radio station WQAM-AM.

What's strange about this is that Channel 6 rarely, if ever, allows its talent to appear on other outlets.

According to Jackson's profile, he worked for ESPN around the same time as Russell, so maybe they are friends from ESPN.

Dr. Brian Taken Off Fox29 Rotation

According to industry sources, Dr. Brian McDonough, who served as Fox29's medical reporter since 1989 is no longer with the station.

Sources say his last day with the station was April 29.

A Fox spokesperson did not immediately return an email about McDonough's status.

It appears that Dr. Mike Cirigliano, who has been filing medical reports for "Good Day Philadelphia" the last year or so, will become the only medical reporter on Fox29.

Even though Cirigliano has only been with the station for a short time, observers speculate that Fox is keeping him because he probably isn't making as much money from Fox.

McDonough continues as a contributor to KYW 1060-AM.

Comments: Dr Brian has always been a class act, on air and behind the scenes.  A true loss for Fox 29.

Chernekoff Chimes In

Former Fox29 news anchor Jill Chernekoff responded to our feature about Susan Barnett:

In an email, Chernekoff wrote, "The Barnett story is a good one. I am reminded that I was a reporter and Sunday PM anchor when I approached my ND (news director) that I was (getting married and) moving to Atlanta . He told me that if I “quit now and left the 4th market (Philadelphia) at “this stage of my career,” it would be the end of my chances for moving up and I risked never anchoring in a major market again.

I was quickly offered an anchor slot by CNN…..a few months later the engagement broke up…….and I had no desire at the time to stay with Headline news in Atlanta.  I needed a Plan B! The Universe responded.

Within a week, that same ND called to offer me the newly-created co-anchor position, in the soon to be premiered One hour Ten O’clock news…..where I would  double my salary. I was to hold that position for the next 11 years, watch ND’s and GM’s (general managers) come and go….formats and co-anchors change…and more and more desperate measures  be taken to boost ratings.

One such measure; Our entire team was let go. (ratings haven’t changed).

Plan C…..has turned out to be the purpose for the entire journey. Like Barnett, in the midst of adversity, who will you choose to be?

Now running my own successful executive presentation and leadership company, thriving in the areas of communication that actually help people learn and grow; inspiring them in a positive way to be the best of who they are; collaborating with brilliant positive partners, and seeing results right before my eyes, (rather than meaningless numbers on a Neilson chart) is deeply rewarding! I am now sought out by organizations and companies all over the country for my “expertise”…rather than agonizing over whether someone else will end my career. "

Barnett Bounces Back

Susan Barnett

Throughout CBS3 anchor Susan Barnett's life, things have gone according to plan - Student Body President and Homecoming Queen at Harry S. Truman High School in Levittown, University of Delaware graduate, Miss USA pageant contestant, marriage, motherhood, and a successful broadcasting career, culminating in Barnett’s hiring as morning news anchor at CBS3 in 2006.

But in the fall of 2007, Barnett’s "Plan A" changed when she was taken off the morning news and demoted to reporter and it was time for "Plan B."

“I experienced the first bump in my career.  I had to pick myself up try to make good of the situation.  I had worked my entire career to get back to my hometown.  My family (parents, four brothers and a sister) was here, and for the first time I wasn’t just an anchor and reporter.  I was an anchor, reporter, wife, and mother,” Barnett said in a phone conversation.

But instead of moping over her circumstances, Barnett focused on reporting, gaining kudos for her work on several stories.

Then in mid-December, things changed for Barnett again when then 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. news anchor, Alycia Lane, was arrested in New York City for allegedly assaulting a police officer in December.

Barnett was tapped to join the CBS3 New Year’s Eve special that Lane was originally scheduled to co-anchor.

When Lane eventually lost her job with the station, (even though charges were later reduced and will be dropped if her record remains clean for six months), Barnett, whose days seemed numbered only a couple of months before, was given the prime assignment to join Larry Mendte at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. in January.

Then, Barnett was asked by management to co-anchor for February sweeps.  She thought that was a good sign but didn’t want to “read into things” after what happened in the fall.

In March, Barnett continued to anchor the shows, and she was finally offered the position permanently a couple of weeks ago, signing a multi-year contract.

Joanne Calabria, spokesperson for CBS3 said, “Susan was a popular choice because she is so well liked and respected by the newsroom staff."

So within a few months, Barnett has gone from getting taken off the morning news to being hired for the evening news with over three times the viewers.

Barnett said, “I learned there are no guarantees in life. When adversity happens, you must deal with it."

It appears that things are going according to plan again for Susan Barnett.
