Though it will probably be awhile before 6ABC names an official replacement for Gary Papa, if I had to make a guess, I think that Jamie Apody will get the nod.
It’s just a guess.

My guess would be Keith, but just a guess also. In the end, it makes little difference, really. With the traveling and live shots from games, they all get a lot of face time, and the ‘official’ anchor designated for a given show spends plenty of time away from the set.

Brian Mitchell is back on WIP for odd shifts.
Wouldn’t be a bad addition to add him to the WPVI mix.

If Laura is correct, I’m glad I don’t watch Action News. That voice and the fact that a woman can’t possibly be taken seriously as a sports director, would turn me away from them. Jamie needs to step away from the Newports. The voice is finger nails on a chalkboard.

I have knocked Russell in the past here for being too over-the-top and exuberant in situations that didnt warrant such levels of excitement.
He has clearly turned it down a notch for a good few months now.
Good for him for improving.
He also has come off as sincere and caring in light of the passing of Gary P.
Well done, Keith.

I think Apody is great. I hope she gets it to show that women can have a role in sports! Also, I doubt she smokes she probably just has a raspy voice….which I sort of like!

How bout Jeff? I know he’s younger and been there a shorter time, but I think he has the talent and the knowledge. Also, what about an outsider, perhaps Tolly?
7 Tom // Jun 30, 2009 at 4:05 pm
6abc does not usually hire personalities that were previously working at other stations. Tolly did work for 6abc a while ago before going to Fox29. They probably will not hire him again. Maybe Billy Vargus?
8 Doug // Jun 30, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Bring Tolley back! That would really spice thinks up over on 6!
9 ImHomerJay // Jun 30, 2009 at 9:04 pm
Hello, Observer…it’s the new modern era calling to invite you to come out of your cave with your Archie Bunker chair and join the rest of civilization.
10 JayWex // Jun 30, 2009 at 11:26 pm
I was thinking Bill Vargus too…. but I thought I heard WPVI doesn’t hire recycled talent. Too bad, he’s such a class act with knowledge! That being said, both Keith and Jamie are fine, in-house choices.
11 TVNewsLover // Jun 30, 2009 at 11:34 pm
Although I think he left Channel 6 unhappy and is happy at his current job with the Phillies, what about Scott Palmer?
12 New Clear Power // Jul 1, 2009 at 7:01 am
Keith Russell has toned down the shtick some from a few months ago (the ESPN style of sports “journalism” is terrifying to watch) but he still doesn’t seem like he’s major market talent yet.
I’d rather see 6 go out and bring in an outsider (Vargas would be a good choice, IMO).

“Hello, Observer…it’s the new modern era calling to invite you to come out of your cave with your Archie Bunker chair and join the rest of civilization.”
What’s wrong with guy stuff REMAINING guy stuff? I don’t want a guy to cohost Martha Stewart or Oprah. I just can’t take women seriously when they’re doing sports reports, or calling games.
14 JayWex // Jul 1, 2009 at 8:43 am
To Observer: You can’t take women seriously when they’re doing sports or calling games? That’s nice and I can’t take bigots seriously when then are spewing unintelligent statements. Welcome to 2009! And guess what: a person’s sex has nothing to do with their knowledge of sports.
15 Observer // Jul 1, 2009 at 3:22 pm
To Jaywex;
You’re using the wrong word; it’s not bigot, it would be sexist. But it’s not. Should guys comment on cross stitch, or on Kotex? NO.
16 JayWex // Jul 1, 2009 at 5:53 pm
Observer,
I was giving you the benefit of the doubt by only calling you a bigot which is formally defined as one who is strongly partial to one’s own group, religion, sex, etc…. sexist works too. And yes, I see nothing wrong with a man commenting on “cross stitch or Kotex.” Education and knowledge are NOT gender specific — welcome to 2009. I can’t believe I’m even responding to your inane ramblings. And this is my last comment on the subject, you’re not worth it.
17 ImHomerJay // Jul 1, 2009 at 8:35 pm
Sexist, bigot, loser, clueless…the list goes on to describe Observer. Pathetic about sums it up. Thankfully, most of us are well past such juvenile behavior.
18 TVNewsLover // Jul 1, 2009 at 9:52 pm
I must say some women are more knowledgable about sports than some men are. I am more concerned with how good of a sportscaster they are rather than what gender they are.
19 New Clear Power // Jul 2, 2009 at 7:28 am
The rumor mill (and Michael Klein) is saying Kevin Negandhi (ESPNer) is in the mix for the job. Other than him being a local kid, he doesn’t have much really going for him…don’t really think he’s that special.
20 Wacky Jack // Jul 2, 2009 at 10:46 am
Kevin is great. He does an excellent job on ESPNews. He really knows his stuff.
Would be an immediate upgrade over Apody, Russell, and Color War General Sverksky
21 ImHomerJay // Jul 2, 2009 at 4:07 pm
I took Klein’s story to mean he might be hired for the deparment, not necessarily the director’s job. One body becomes full time (essentially) weeknight anchor, which means either a reporter/backup anchor or weekend anchor/reporter job would be vacant (and assuming Disney wants to fill it).
22 Rick // Jul 3, 2009 at 12:11 am
I think they should move around the sports department like this:
-Jamie Apody : Sports Director, Weeknights, 6 & 11 PM
-Kieth Russell: Weeknights, 5:30 PM
-Jeff Skversky: Weekends, 6 & 11 PM (Jeff can still do weekly reporting)
23 JULIUS MAY // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:13 pm
Channel 6 need to stop having this mentality of not hiring new people because they worked for the other stations in town. They should hire someone THAT IS GOOD, not because they worked for channel 3 for example.
24 ImHomerJay // Jul 3, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Um, yeah, Julius. I’m sure with the way channel 6’s ratings have been so far behind the other guys for so long now that they “need” to change their approach.
Your personal tastes…whatever they are…don’t speak to everyone’s definitions of good, bad or indifferent.
Perhaps the one in ‘need’ here is you, in need of getting a slight clue about the business.
25 ChipsDad // Jul 4, 2009 at 8:24 pm
You go Jodie ~ i like her voice, enthusiasm & knowldege.
Check her bio - she has sports in her DNA.

Sorry that the rest of us in the room aren’t as smart and advanced as the liberal piece of crap that you are. I’ll just sit over here, reading my copy of “Atlas Shrugged” and laughing at your idiotology that says everybody has to agree with your stupid ass.
What a retard.
(Remember that YOU started the name calling, shit stain)

PLEASE KEEP THESE COMMENTS RELATED TO THE TOPIC LAURA HAS POSTED ABOUT (THIS ONE IS THE REPLACEMENT OF GARY PAPA).
28 TVNewsLover // Jul 6, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Observer, if you can’t listen to a woman doing sports, than you’re the one with the problem. As far as I’m concerned, I don’t care who it is just as long as they are knowledgeable and good at their job. Shouldn’t that be all that matters? I mean, there are male sportscasters out there that are horrible. I would take a talented and knowledgeable female over those guys any day. And you don’t have to be advanced and liberal too think this way!
29 ImHomerJay // Jul 6, 2009 at 7:51 pm
Ah, Observer. Now I see. Anyone that calls you on the carpet for being a bigot who can’t accept equality has to be liberal. Political leanings have nothing to do with being able to accept that the gender isn’t a job requirement for being a sports reporter.
30 Observer // Jul 7, 2009 at 7:11 am
Ah, ImHomerJay. Now I see. Anyone who disagrees with you must be small minded. Political leanings have EVERYTHING to do with being able to accept that sometimes, a man does something better than a woman, and vice versa, and that there’s nothing wrong with having a different position than the great ImHomerJay.
I don’t care if channel 6 wants to put a woman in the sports chair. Not when there’s an important story like the world’s most famous pedophile being buried.
31 ImHomerJay // Jul 7, 2009 at 9:15 pm
You don’t care and yet you commented. Contradict yourself much?
Care to see my voter registration card? You might be surprised at how wrong your assumptions…how EVERYTHING being tied to political views…are. Or maybe you wouldn’t. It takes an actual open mind to process such things.
32 Observer // Jul 7, 2009 at 10:24 pm
Yeah, Jay, I might be surprised to find out that you’re a RINO, right?
33 Observer // Jul 7, 2009 at 10:26 pm
Oh, Jay, you’re right about one thing; it does seem like I contradicted myself, but I worded the post poorly. I meant to say, “I don’t have any control”.
34 ImHomerJay // Jul 8, 2009 at 7:26 pm
So, observer-who-has-a-problem-with-seeing, do tell what the official criteria are for being a RINO? Not agreeing with one plank of the RNC platform? Two planks? Three planks? Come on, let’s hear it.
How about making decisions on issues based on merit, not what the DNC or RNC (or whomever) tells you one must believe to be a “real” liberal, conservative or whatever. Novel concept, perhaps.
35 Observer // Jul 9, 2009 at 8:14 am
The criteria for being a RINO are as follows:
1) BIG ass
2) Horn in middle of head
3) Enjoyment of wallowing in rivers all the live long day
4) Inability to hear a screechy, horrible, Newport induced voice.
5) Inability to realize that a woman makes a horrible sportscaster.
That’s about it.
36 TVNewsLover // Jul 9, 2009 at 6:11 pm
Wow. Way to go Observer, judging someone on the basis of their gender and not on their knowledge and how good they are at their job. Did it ever occur to you that there are males that make horrrible sportscasters? It’s different if you thought that Apody is horrible, but you seem to think that all women make horrible sportscasters. Welcome to the 21st century when you decide to join us.
37 ImHomerJay // Jul 9, 2009 at 9:05 pm
Imagine those great, nurturing conversations with a daughter. “You can be anything you want to when you grow up honey, as long as it’s a housewife, stewardess, stripper or kindergarten teacher. Everything else is a boy job, most of all being a sportscaster, because as everybody knows, the only way to know about sports is to have a penis.”
38 Observer // Jul 11, 2009 at 11:22 pm
When did I say a woman couldn’t do the job? I said that I don’t like women talking to me about sports. It’s equivalent to you liking mushrooms on a pizza, and me not liking it. That’s all.
